Heart failure has emerged as one of the most important diseases of the past century. The understanding and treatment of heart failure has evolved significantly over the years. As we move further into the era of device therapy, attention has turned to the idea of sympathetic nervous system modulation through renal denervation to treat heart failure. In this review, we summarize the background research, denervation technique, and current studies on renal denervation for the treatment of heart failure. We also compare and contrast the work on carotid barostimulation.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D011311 Pressoreceptors Receptors in the vascular system, particularly the aorta and carotid sinus, which are sensitive to stretch of the vessel walls. D003714 Denervation The resection or removal of the nerve to an organ or part. D006333 Heart Failure A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013562 Sympathectomy The removal or interruption of some part of the sympathetic nervous system for therapeutic or research purposes. Denervation, Sympathetic,Sympathetic Denervation,Denervations, Sympathetic,Sympathectomies,Sympathetic Denervations
D013564 Sympathetic Nervous System The thoracolumbar division of the autonomic nervous system. Sympathetic preganglionic fibers originate in neurons of the intermediolateral column of the spinal cord and project to the paravertebral and prevertebral ganglia, which in turn project to target organs. The sympathetic nervous system mediates the body's response to stressful situations, i.e., the fight or flight reactions. It often acts reciprocally to the parasympathetic system.
