The increasing use of hospitalization in adolescent psychiatric treatment is arousing public and professional concern. Numerous factors may be contributing to inappropriate or unnecessary inpatient care. The misuse of hospitalization ultimately may lead to reduced third-party coverage for needed care. Nurses can help promote adherence to guidelines for hospitalization, such as those set by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
