Refusal to attend school requires prompt action and may demand 'diplomatic' as well as clinical skills. It is important to identify the problem quickly and take decisive action, otherwise the situation may become very difficult. GPs should also be aware of factors such as learning disorders and 'misplaced sympathy'.
