Departamento de Farmacologia, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brasil.

The effects of acute administration of maneb (30 mg/kg, i.p.), an agricultural fungicide, combined with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP 50 mg/kg, i.p.), a dopaminergic neurotoxin, were examined on mouse locomotor activity and catalepsy test. The pretreatment with maneb significantly exacerbated the effects of MPTP on locomotion and catalepsy in mice. These results suggest that exposure to some pesticides might enhance motor dysfunction.

D008344 Maneb Manganese derivative of ethylenebisdithiocarbamate. It is used in agriculture as a fungicide and has been shown to cause irritation to the eyes, nose, skin, and throat. Manganese, ((1,2-ethanediylbis(carbamodithioato))(2-))-

D002375 Catalepsy A condition characterized by inactivity, decreased responsiveness to stimuli, and a tendency to maintain an immobile posture. The limbs tend to remain in whatever position they are placed (waxy flexibility). Catalepsy may be associated with PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS (e.g., SCHIZOPHRENIA, CATATONIC), nervous system drug toxicity, and other conditions. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
