When the patch test reaction to aeroallergens in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients is considered a representative model to study its pathogenesis, then eosinophils may really be involved in the pathogenesis of AD. They actively infiltrate the dermis and the epidermis after patch testing with aeroallergens and even release part of their granular constituents. The role eosinophils play in the pathogenesis of AD is still open for discussion. The granular components of the eosinophil may certainly contribute to a situation of chronic inflammation. On the other hand one should seriously consider the possibility of a beneficial role also, i.e. modulation of the lymphoproliferative response.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D003876 Dermatitis, Atopic A chronic inflammatory genetically determined disease of the skin marked by increased ability to form reagin (IgE), with increased susceptibility to allergic rhinitis and asthma, and hereditary disposition to a lowered threshold for pruritus. It is manifested by lichenification, excoriation, and crusting, mainly on the flexural surfaces of the elbow and knee. In infants it is known as infantile eczema. D004804 Eosinophils Granular leukocytes with a nucleus that usually has two lobes connected by a slender thread of chromatin, and cytoplasm containing coarse, round granules that are uniform in size and stainable by eosin. Eosinophil

D000485 Allergens Antigen-type substances that produce immediate hypersensitivity (HYPERSENSITIVITY, IMMEDIATE). Allergen
D012867 Skin The outer covering of the body that protects it from the environment. It is composed of the DERMIS and the EPIDERMIS.
D012882 Skin Tests Epicutaneous or intradermal application of a sensitizer for demonstration of either delayed or immediate hypersensitivity. Used in diagnosis of hypersensitivity or as a test for cellular immunity. Skin Test,Test, Skin,Tests, Skin
