Models of tumor angiogenesis have played a critical role in understanding the mechanisms involved in the recruitment of vasculature to the tumor mass, and have also provided a platform for testing antiangiogenic potential of new therapeutics that combat the development of malignant growth. In this regard, the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the developing chick embryo has proven to be an elegant model for investigation of angiogenic processes. Here, we describe methods for effectively utilizing the preestablished vascular network of the chick CAM to investigate and quantify tumor-associated angiogenesis in a breast tumor model.

D002642 Chick Embryo The developmental entity of a fertilized chicken egg (ZYGOTE). The developmental process begins about 24 h before the egg is laid at the BLASTODISC, a small whitish spot on the surface of the EGG YOLK. After 21 days of incubation, the embryo is fully developed before hatching. Embryo, Chick,Chick Embryos,Embryos, Chick
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D049033 Chorioallantoic Membrane A highly vascularized extra-embryonic membrane, formed by the fusion of the CHORION and the ALLANTOIS. It is mostly found in BIRDS and REPTILES. It serves as a model for studying tumor or cell biology, such as angiogenesis and TISSUE TRANSPLANTATION. Chorioallantoic Membranes,Membrane, Chorioallantoic,Membranes, Chorioallantoic
