[Acute extradural hematoma in pediatrics]. 1989

G Aranda González, and C González, and C Castillo

The authors review the clinical reports of twelve children with craniocerebral trauma admitted to the Children's Hospital of Panama from January 1979 to March 1987 who underwent neurosurgery for supratentorial acute extradural hematoma. The age range was 7 months to 14 years. Findings in relation to age, cause of injury, location of the extradural hematoma, lucid interval period, mortality rate, prognosis, plain roentgenograms, cerebral angiograms, and computerized axial tomography are discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007223 Infant A child between 1 and 23 months of age. Infants
D008297 Male Males
D001930 Brain Injuries Acute and chronic (see also BRAIN INJURIES, CHRONIC) injuries to the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres, CEREBELLUM, and BRAIN STEM. Clinical manifestations depend on the nature of injury. Diffuse trauma to the brain is frequently associated with DIFFUSE AXONAL INJURY or COMA, POST-TRAUMATIC. Localized injuries may be associated with NEUROBEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS; HEMIPARESIS, or other focal neurologic deficits. D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D003128 Coma A profound state of unconsciousness associated with depressed cerebral activity from which the individual cannot be aroused. Coma generally occurs when there is dysfunction or injury involving both cerebral hemispheres or the brain stem RETICULAR FORMATION. Comatose,Pseudocoma,Comas,Pseudocomas
D005260 Female Females
D006407 Hematoma, Epidural, Cranial Accumulation of blood in the EPIDURAL SPACE between the SKULL and the DURA MATER, often as a result of bleeding from the MENINGEAL ARTERIES associated with a temporal or parietal bone fracture. Epidural hematoma tends to expand rapidly, compressing the dura and underlying brain. Clinical features may include HEADACHE; VOMITING; HEMIPARESIS; and impaired mental function.
