[Root canal filling after apicoectomy, as seen on the scanning electron microscope]. 1978

J Svejda, and O Brázda

The radiologically controled apicectomy shows frequently unsuccessful results. In histological examinations of the root apex area after apicectomy chronic inflammation is regularly seen even in negative radiologic findings. Examination of the most frequently used root filling material (zincoxyphosphate with guttapercha point) by scanning electron microscopy shows a porous surface and between the canal wall and the root filling material there appears regularly a deep groove as no contact is achieved. The rough surface structure, the chemical composition and the loose contact of the components in this area are considered irritative factors and reasons of failure in treatment.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008855 Microscopy, Electron, Scanning Microscopy in which the object is examined directly by an electron beam scanning the specimen point-by-point. The image is constructed by detecting the products of specimen interactions that are projected above the plane of the sample, such as backscattered electrons. Although SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY also scans the specimen point by point with the electron beam, the image is constructed by detecting the electrons, or their interaction products that are transmitted through the sample plane, so that is a form of TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. D006171 Gutta-Percha Coagulated exudate isolated from several species of the tropical tree Palaquium (Sapotaceae). It is the trans-isomer of natural rubber and is used as a filling and impression material in dentistry and orthopedics and as an insulator in electronics. It has also been used as a rubber substitute. Thermafil,Guttapercha,Ultrafil,Gutta Percha

D012389 Root Canal Obturation Phase of endodontic treatment in which a root canal system that has been cleaned is filled through use of special materials and techniques in order to prevent reinfection. D015036 Zinc Phosphate Cement A material used for cementation of inlays, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances and occasionally as a temporary restoration. It is prepared by mixing zinc oxide and magnesium oxide powders with a liquid consisting principally of phosphoric acid, water, and buffers.
