Dynamics of blood coagulation factor XIII in ulcerative colitis and preliminary study of the factor XIII concentrate. 1989

Third Department of Internal Medicine, Yokohama City University Hospital, Japan.

Blood coagulation studies were performed in twenty patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). At the active stage of UC, a marked increase in platelet count and fibrinogen concentration, and a marked decrease in Factor XIII activity level were observed. At the active stage of UC, four patients were treated with Factor XIII concentrate leading to reduction of pain, bleeding and endoscopic findings.

D003093 Colitis, Ulcerative Inflammation of the COLON that is predominantly confined to the MUCOSA. Its major symptoms include DIARRHEA, rectal BLEEDING, the passage of MUCUS, and ABDOMINAL PAIN. D005176 Factor XIII A fibrin-stabilizing plasma enzyme (TRANSGLUTAMINASES) that is activated by THROMBIN and CALCIUM to form FACTOR XIIIA. It is important for stabilizing the formation of the fibrin polymer (clot) which culminates the coagulation cascade. D005340 Fibrinogen Plasma glycoprotein clotted by thrombin, composed of a dimer of three non-identical pairs of polypeptide chains (alpha, beta, gamma) held together by disulfide bonds. Fibrinogen clotting is a sol-gel change involving complex molecular arrangements: whereas fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form polypeptides A and B, the proteolytic action of other enzymes yields different fibrinogen degradation products. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
