Geoffrey Mospan is an assistant professor of pharmacy at Wingate University School of Pharmacy in Wingate, N.C. Darrell Hulisz is an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, and a clinical pharmacy specialist at University Hospitals, Case Medical Center. The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

New guidelines have been released for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections. The updates include recommendations on when to prescribe antibiotics and which antibiotics are effective for each infection. This article will highlight the important changes to practice and provide additional antibiotic clinical pearls.

The concept is usually referred to as skin and soft tissue infections and usually subcutaneous and muscle tissue are involved. The predisposing factors in anaerobic infections are trauma, ischemia, and surgery. The organisms often derive from the fecal or oral flora, particularly in wounds associated with intestinal surgery, decubitus ulcer, and human bites.
