Hearing sensitivity of adults with cleft lip and/or palate. 1979

E Swigart

This study is designed to investigate the hearing sensitivity of adults with repaired clefts of the lip and/or palate or congenital velopharyngeal inadequacy (VPI). Hearing sensitivity was analyzed with respect to pure tone air conduction thresholds and the extent of air bone gap. In addition to age, type of cleft and type of physical management of the palate were taken into account. The results of the study indicated that the thresholds of individuals with clefts of the palate or VPI exceeded normal limits. There were no significant differences in thresholds among the four types of palatal clefts or among the types of physical management of the palates.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D001844 Bone Conduction Transmission of sound waves through vibration of bones in the SKULL to the inner ear (COCHLEA). By using bone conduction stimulation and by bypassing any OUTER EAR or MIDDLE EAR abnormalities, hearing thresholds of the cochlea can be determined. Bone conduction hearing differs from normal hearing which is based on air conduction stimulation via the EAR CANAL and the TYMPANIC MEMBRANE. D002971 Cleft Lip Congenital defect in the upper lip where the maxillary prominence fails to merge with the merged medial nasal prominences. It is thought to be caused by faulty migration of the mesoderm in the head region. Harelip,Cleft Lips,Harelips,Lip, Cleft,Lips, Cleft
D002972 Cleft Palate Congenital fissure of the soft and/or hard palate, due to faulty fusion. Cleft Palate, Isolated,Cleft Palates,Palate, Cleft,Palates, Cleft
D006309 Hearing The ability or act of sensing and transducing ACOUSTIC STIMULATION to the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. It is also called audition. Audition
D006314 Hearing Loss, Conductive Hearing loss due to interference with the mechanical reception or amplification of sound to the COCHLEA. The interference is in the outer or middle ear involving the EAR CANAL; TYMPANIC MEMBRANE; or EAR OSSICLES. Conductive Hearing Loss
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000293 Adolescent A person 13 to 18 years of age. Adolescence,Youth,Adolescents,Adolescents, Female,Adolescents, Male,Teenagers,Teens,Adolescent, Female,Adolescent, Male,Female Adolescent,Female Adolescents,Male Adolescent,Male Adolescents,Teen,Teenager,Youths
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D001299 Audiometry The testing of the acuity of the sense of hearing to determine the thresholds of the lowest intensity levels at which an individual can hear a set of tones. The frequencies between 125 and 8000 Hz are used to test air conduction thresholds and the frequencies between 250 and 4000 Hz are used to test bone conduction thresholds. Audiometries
