A non-destructive optical method to study de- and remineralization of enamel. 1979

J J ten Bosch, and P C Borsboom, and J M ten Cate

The absorption and scattering of light in dental enamel or in a carious lesion have been studied quantitatively by using thin slabs. The method thus required destructive preparation techniques. In this paper we describe how the scattering by a bulk sample can be used to obtain semi-quantitative information.

D003720 Densitometry The measurement of the density of a material by measuring the amount of light or radiation passing through (or absorbed by) the material. Densitometries
D003731 Dental Caries Localized destruction of the tooth surface initiated by decalcification of the enamel followed by enzymatic lysis of organic structures and leading to cavity formation. If left unchecked, the cavity may penetrate the enamel and dentin and reach the pulp. D003743 Dental Enamel A hard thin translucent layer of calcified substance which envelops and protects the dentin of the crown of the tooth. It is the hardest substance in the body and is almost entirely composed of calcium salts. Under the microscope, it is composed of thin rods (enamel prisms) held together by cementing substance, and surrounded by an enamel sheath. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D014074 Tooth Calcification The process whereby calcium salts are deposited in the dental enamel. The process is normal in the development of bones and teeth. D055095 Optics and Photonics A specialized field of physics and engineering involved in studying the behavior and properties of light and the technology of analyzing, generating, transmitting, and manipulating ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION in the visible, infrared, and ultraviolet range. Photonics,Photonics and Optics
