Human leucocyte elastase and serum alpha 1-antitrypsin. 1988

Human leucocyte elastase concentration and its major circulating inhibitor, the alpha 1-antitrypsin, were compared in blood samples taken from 17 healthy male donors. Leucocyte elastase concentration was linearly correlated to the serum antitrypsin activity determined by its phenotypic constitution. Thus it seems that cellular elastase and its circulating inhibitor activities are closely coregulated. This might be mediated by the leucocyte elastase receptors which internalize free elastase possibly suppressing synthesis of the enzyme.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007962 Leukocytes White blood cells. These include granular leukocytes (BASOPHILS; EOSINOPHILS; and NEUTROPHILS) as well as non-granular leukocytes (LYMPHOCYTES and MONOCYTES). D010196 Pancreatic Elastase A protease of broad specificity, obtained from dried pancreas. Molecular weight is approximately 25,000. The enzyme breaks down elastin, the specific protein of elastic fibers, and digests other proteins such as fibrin, hemoglobin, and albumin. EC 3.4.21.36. D011956 Receptors, Cell Surface Cell surface proteins that bind signalling molecules external to the cell with high affinity and convert this extracellular event into one or more intracellular signals that alter the behavior of the target cell (From Alberts, Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2nd ed, pp693-5). Cell surface receptors, unlike enzymes, do not chemically alter their ligands.
