A laser instrument for measuring tooth movements. 1979

H Rydén, and H Bjelkhagen, and U Sandström

An improved apparatus has been constructed which is based upon the laser reflexion method and is used in a highly accurate direct technique of measuring tooth movement without contact. The possibility of making clinical investigations of tooth movements with the equipment has been investigated by testing its various components. The most critical part of the system is the repositioning of the patient, which has been done with an accuracy of +/- 20 micron. The reflected pattern used during 3 months of experiments was the same. The instrument can be used for measurements down to 50 micron.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007834 Lasers An optical source that emits photons in a coherent beam. Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER) is brought about using devices that transform light of varying frequencies into a single intense, nearly nondivergent beam of monochromatic radiation. Lasers operate in the infrared, visible, ultraviolet, or X-ray regions of the spectrum. D014086 Tooth Mobility Horizontal and, to a lesser degree, axial movement of a tooth in response to normal forces, as in occlusion. It refers also to the movability of a tooth resulting from loss of all or a portion of its attachment and supportive apparatus, as seen in periodontitis, occlusal trauma, and periodontosis.
