Four patients with psoriasis complicating human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection showed marked improvement in their psoriasis after being treated with oral zidovudine. The antipsoriatic effect persisted in two patients in spite of worsening helper T cell depletion. The antipsoriatic effect appeared to be dose-dependent and was associated with the development of erythrocyte macrocytosis, a known side effect of zidovudine. Zidovudine is useful for the therapy of HIV-associated psoriasis and should be tested for efficacy in non-HIV-associated psoriasis.

D009260 Nail Diseases Diseases of the nail plate and tissues surrounding it. The concept is limited to primates. Disease, Nail,Diseases, Nail,Nail Disease
D011565 Psoriasis A common genetically determined, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by rounded erythematous, dry, scaling patches. The lesions have a predilection for nails, scalp, genitalia, extensor surfaces, and the lumbosacral region. Accelerated epidermopoiesis is considered to be the fundamental pathologic feature in psoriasis. D000163 Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome An acquired defect of cellular immunity associated with infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a CD4-positive T-lymphocyte count under 200 cells/microliter or less than 14% of total lymphocytes, and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections and malignant neoplasms. Clinical manifestations also include emaciation (wasting) and dementia. These elements reflect criteria for AIDS as defined by the CDC in 1993. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D015215 Zidovudine A dideoxynucleoside compound in which the 3'-hydroxy group on the sugar moiety has been replaced by an azido group. This modification prevents the formation of phosphodiester linkages which are needed for the completion of nucleic acid chains. The compound is a potent inhibitor of HIV replication, acting as a chain-terminator of viral DNA during reverse transcription. It improves immunologic function, partially reverses the HIV-induced neurological dysfunction, and improves certain other clinical abnormalities associated with AIDS. Its principal toxic effect is dose-dependent suppression of bone marrow, resulting in anemia and leukopenia.
