Nursing diagnosis can be a useful tool in planning the care of the psychiatric patient, if the diagnostic label and etiology are developed accurately. Goals and interventions are planned to meet the defined nursing diagnoses. Examples of the application of the nursing process to the care of the mentally ill are described.
