Platelet-activating factor: a unique lipid chemical mediator. 1985

D J Hanahan, and D Buxton, and O Halvorsen, and M S Olson

Several different laboratories have provided sufficient information to establish platelet-activating factor, or AGEPC, as one of the most potent lipid chemical mediators known to date and one with a particularly broad spectrum of biological activities. The data presented in this chapter strengthen this generalization and show yet another dramatic biochemical effect of this unusual phosphoglyceride. The mechanism by which AGEPC effects glycogenolysis and vasoconstriction remains the subject of an ongoing investigation.

D010972 Platelet Activating Factor A phospholipid derivative formed by PLATELETS; BASOPHILS; NEUTROPHILS; MONOCYTES; and MACROPHAGES. It is a potent platelet aggregating agent and inducer of systemic anaphylactic symptoms, including HYPOTENSION; THROMBOCYTOPENIA; NEUTROPENIA; and BRONCHOCONSTRICTION. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
