Ketanserin and malignant hyperthermia in pigs. 1986

H Ording, and A Hald, and E Sjøntoft

Four Danish landrace pigs susceptible to MH were challenged with halothane and suxamethonium on six occasions after pretreatment with the serotonin-S2 antagonist ketanserin 0.4 mg/kg (three animals) or 4 mg/kg (three animals). The animals developed typical MH on all occasions despite the pretreatment. Dantrolene remains the only specific drug for prevention and treatment of MH.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007650 Ketanserin A selective serotonin receptor antagonist with weak adrenergic receptor blocking properties. The drug is effective in lowering blood pressure in essential hypertension. It also inhibits platelet aggregation. It is well tolerated and is particularly effective in older patients. 3-(2-(4-(4-Fluorobenzoyl)piperidinol)ethyl)-2,4(1H,3H)-quinazolinedione,R-41,468,R-41468,R 41,468,R 41468,R41,468,R41468
D007773 Lactates Salts or esters of LACTIC ACID containing the general formula CH3CHOHCOOR.
D008305 Malignant Hyperthermia Rapid and excessive rise of temperature accompanied by muscular rigidity following general anesthesia. D010880 Piperidines A family of hexahydropyridines.
D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.

D001831 Body Temperature The measure of the level of heat of a human or animal. Organ Temperature,Body Temperatures,Organ Temperatures,Temperature, Body,Temperature, Organ,Temperatures, Body,Temperatures, Organ
D002245 Carbon Dioxide A colorless, odorless gas that can be formed by the body and is necessary for the respiration cycle of plants and animals. Carbonic Anhydride,Anhydride, Carbonic,Dioxide, Carbon
D006221 Halothane A nonflammable, halogenated, hydrocarbon anesthetic that provides relatively rapid induction with little or no excitement. Analgesia may not be adequate. NITROUS OXIDE is often given concomitantly. Because halothane may not produce sufficient muscle relaxation, supplemental neuromuscular blocking agents may be required.
