[Clinical interpretation of retinal circulatory measurements. I. Technical measurement possibilities and clinical interpretation aid]. 1986

W Vilser, and E Königsdörffer, and A Jütte, and A Deufrains

The present possibilities to measure blood flow and other magnitudes of retinal microcirculation in vivo are discussed. On this basis, a simple model designed for retinal microcirculation is presented as a tool for the clinical interpretation of measuring results. Based on the experience of over 200 measurements of retinal microcirculation magnitudes, subsequent reports give a clinical interpretation of measuring results, utilizing the measuring models presented. Thus, it is intended to demonstrate the actual clinical significance of such measurements.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008833 Microcirculation The circulation of the BLOOD through the MICROVASCULAR NETWORK. Microvascular Blood Flow,Microvascular Circulation,Blood Flow, Microvascular,Circulation, Microvascular,Flow, Microvascular Blood,Microvascular Blood Flows,Microvascular Circulations
D009887 Ophthalmoscopy Examination of the interior of the eye with an ophthalmoscope. Ophthalmoscopies
D012164 Retinal Diseases Diseases involving the RETINA. Disease, Retinal,Diseases, Retinal,Retinal Disease
D001783 Blood Flow Velocity A value equal to the total volume flow divided by the cross-sectional area of the vascular bed. Blood Flow Velocities,Flow Velocities, Blood,Flow Velocity, Blood,Velocities, Blood Flow,Velocity, Blood Flow
D002199 Capillary Permeability The property of blood capillary ENDOTHELIUM that allows for the selective exchange of substances between the blood and surrounding tissues and through membranous barriers such as the BLOOD-AIR BARRIER; BLOOD-AQUEOUS BARRIER; BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER; BLOOD-NERVE BARRIER; BLOOD-RETINAL BARRIER; and BLOOD-TESTIS BARRIER. Small lipid-soluble molecules such as carbon dioxide and oxygen move freely by diffusion. Water and water-soluble molecules cannot pass through the endothelial walls and are dependent on microscopic pores. These pores show narrow areas (TIGHT JUNCTIONS) which may limit large molecule movement. D005451 Fluorescein Angiography Visualization of a vascular system after intravenous injection of a fluorescein solution. The images may be photographed or televised. It is used especially in studying the retinal and uveal vasculature.
