Anti-Rho(D) in two Rh-positive patients receiving kidney grafts from an Rh-immunized donor. 1986

Kidneys from an Rh-negative cadaver donor were transplanted to two Rh-positive patients. The donor's serum contained anti-Rho (D). In both patients, anti-Rho (D) was detected in their serum and on their red cells 3.5 weeks after transplantation. One patient had hemolysis. The antibodies persisted for nearly six months, despite graft rejection and nephrectomy in one case. These antibodies presumably arose from passenger B lymphocytes in the grafts from the Rh-immunized donor.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007136 Immunoglobulins Multi-subunit proteins which function in IMMUNITY. They are produced by B LYMPHOCYTES from the IMMUNOGLOBULIN GENES. They are comprised of two heavy (IMMUNOGLOBULIN HEAVY CHAINS) and two light chains (IMMUNOGLOBULIN LIGHT CHAINS) with additional ancillary polypeptide chains depending on their isoforms. The variety of isoforms include monomeric or polymeric forms, and transmembrane forms (B-CELL ANTIGEN RECEPTORS) or secreted forms (ANTIBODIES). They are divided by the amino acid sequence of their heavy chains into five classes (IMMUNOGLOBULIN A; IMMUNOGLOBULIN D; IMMUNOGLOBULIN E; IMMUNOGLOBULIN G; IMMUNOGLOBULIN M) and various subclasses. D012203 Rh Isoimmunization The process by which fetal Rh+ erythrocytes enter the circulation of an Rh- mother, causing her to produce IMMUNOGLOBULIN G antibodies, which can cross the placenta and destroy the erythrocytes of Rh+ fetuses. Rh isoimmunization can also be caused by BLOOD TRANSFUSION with mismatched blood.
