Blood pressure, erythrocyte sodium and potassium concentrations and Na+K+ATPase activity in children with hypertensive mothers. 1986

A Svensson, and L Sigström

Fifty-four children aged 10-15 years were studied. Twenty-two children had mothers who had sustained hypertension after a hypertensive pregnancy (HT) and 17 had normotensive mothers who had previously had a hypertensive pregnancy (NT). A control group consisted of 15 children with normotensive mothers (C). Blood pressure was significantly higher in the HT group in comparison with the C group (P less than 0.01). Erythrocyte sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) concentrations were similar in all groups and not related to blood pressure. The Na+K+ATPase activity in erythrocyte membranes was lower in the HT group than in the NT group (P less than 0.02), but not significantly different from the C group. There was no statistically significant correlation between Na+K+ATPase activity and blood pressure.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. D008297 Male Males
D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.

D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D004912 Erythrocytes Red blood cells. Mature erythrocytes are non-nucleated, biconcave disks containing HEMOGLOBIN whose function is to transport OXYGEN. D000254 Sodium-Potassium-Exchanging ATPase An enzyme that catalyzes the active transport system of sodium and potassium ions across the cell wall. Sodium and potassium ions are closely coupled with membrane ATPase which undergoes phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, thereby providing energy for transport of these ions against concentration gradients.
