BACKGROUND Heart injury is one of the most important concerns after exposure to a high dose of radiation in chest cancer radiotherapy or whole body exposure to a radiation disaster. Studies have proposed that increased level of inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokines following radiotherapy or radiation events play a key role in the development of several side effects such as cardiovascular disorders. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the expression of IL-4 and IL-13 cytokines as well as signaling pathways such as IL4Ra1, IL13Ra2, Duox1 and Duox2. In addition, we detected the possible protective effect of curcumin on the expression of these factors and infiltration of inflammatory cells. METHODS Twenty rats were divided into 4 groups including control; curcumin treated; radiation; and radiation plus curcumin. After 10 weeks, rats were sacrificed for evaluation of mentioned parameters. RESULTS Results showed an increase in the level of IL-4 and all evaluated genes, as well as increased infiltration of lymphocytes and macrophages. Treatment with curcumin could attenuate these changes. CONCLUSIONS Curcumin could reduce radiation-induced heart injury markers in rats.

D003474 Curcumin A yellow-orange dye obtained from tumeric, the powdered root of CURCUMA longa. It is used in the preparation of curcuma paper and the detection of boron. Curcumin appears to possess a spectrum of pharmacological properties, due primarily to its inhibitory effects on metabolic enzymes. 1,6-Heptadiene-3,5-dione, 1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-, (E,E)-,Curcumin Phytosome,Diferuloylmethane,Mervia,Turmeric Yellow,Phytosome, Curcumin,Yellow, Turmeric
D004797 Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay An immunoassay utilizing an antibody labeled with an enzyme marker such as horseradish peroxidase. While either the enzyme or the antibody is bound to an immunosorbent substrate, they both retain their biologic activity; the change in enzyme activity as a result of the enzyme-antibody-antigen reaction is proportional to the concentration of the antigen and can be measured spectrophotometrically or with the naked eye. Many variations of the method have been developed. D006321 Heart The hollow, muscular organ that maintains the circulation of the blood. Hearts
D000074623 Dual Oxidases NADPH oxidases that contain two additional EF HAND MOTIFS and an N-terminal PEROXIDASE domain. They are expressed by THYROCYTES and EPITHELIAL CELLS of the kidney, liver, trachea, lung, and glandular tissues such as the testis, pancreas, and prostate. They are critical for the activity of THYROID PEROXIDASE and play a role in the production of thyroid hormones; they may also have antimicrobial activity through the generation of REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D015398 Signal Transduction The intracellular transfer of information (biological activation/inhibition) through a signal pathway. In each signal transduction system, an activation/inhibition signal from a biologically active molecule (hormone, neurotransmitter) is mediated via the coupling of a receptor/enzyme to a second messenger system or to an ion channel. Signal transduction plays an important role in activating cellular functions, cell differentiation, and cell proliferation. Examples of signal transduction systems are the GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID-postsynaptic receptor-calcium ion channel system, the receptor-mediated T-cell activation pathway, and the receptor-mediated activation of phospholipases. Those coupled to membrane depolarization or intracellular release of calcium include the receptor-mediated activation of cytotoxic functions in granulocytes and the synaptic potentiation of protein kinase activation. Some signal transduction pathways may be part of larger signal transduction pathways; for example, protein kinase activation is part of the platelet activation signal pathway.
