Sporadic non-A, non-B hepatitis and Epstein-Barr hepatitis associated with the Guillain-Barré syndrome. 1987

W N Macleod

Three cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) complicating sporadic non-A, non-B viral hepatitis (NANB) are reported. One case occurred in the incubation period for NANB hepatitis, and the other cases were noted to have hepatitis at the time of hospital admission due to paralysis. Three patients (13%) in a prospective series of 23 patients with GBS were found to have subclinical hepatitis (two patients with NANB hepatitis, and one patient with Epstein-Barr viral hepatitis). This unexpectedly high incidence of hepatitis associated with GBS is discussed and a possible causal link between NANB hepatitis and surgery-related GBS is proposed.

D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011129 Polyradiculoneuropathy Diseases characterized by injury or dysfunction involving multiple peripheral nerves and nerve roots. The process may primarily affect myelin or nerve axons. Two of the more common demyelinating forms are acute inflammatory polyradiculopathy (GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME) and POLYRADICULONEUROPATHY, CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DEMYELINATING. Polyradiculoneuritis refers to inflammation of multiple peripheral nerves and spinal nerve roots. D004854 Herpesvirus 4, Human The type species of LYMPHOCRYPTOVIRUS, subfamily GAMMAHERPESVIRINAE, infecting B-cells in humans. It is thought to be the causative agent of INFECTIOUS MONONUCLEOSIS and is strongly associated with oral hairy leukoplakia (LEUKOPLAKIA, HAIRY;), BURKITT LYMPHOMA; and other malignancies. D005260 Female Females
D006525 Hepatitis, Viral, Human INFLAMMATION of the LIVER in humans due to infection by VIRUSES. There are several significant types of human viral hepatitis with infection caused by enteric-transmission (HEPATITIS A; HEPATITIS E) or blood transfusion (HEPATITIS B; HEPATITIS C; and HEPATITIS D). D006526 Hepatitis C INFLAMMATION of the LIVER in humans caused by HEPATITIS C VIRUS, a single-stranded RNA virus. Its incubation period is 30-90 days. Hepatitis C is transmitted primarily by contaminated blood parenterally and is often associated with transfusion and intravenous drug abuse. However, in a significant number of cases, the source of hepatitis C infection is unknown.
