[Long-term results of radical prostatectomy]. 1988

Between 1969 and March 1988, 257 patients underwent radical prostatectomy at the Department of Urology at the University of Würzburg, Medical School. The operative mortality was 0.8%. So far, 75 patients with prostate carcinoma, stage pT1-3 pNoMo, have been followed up for more than 10 years (mean 13 years). The 10-year survival rate was 68%. This is equivalent to the expected survival rate of males of comparable age. Only 14 of the 75 patients (18.6%) died of tumor progression after radical prostatectomy. Tumor recurrence was noted in 17 of the 75 (22.6%) patients analyzed within a 10-year follow-up period. In 4 of 9 patients with periprostatic tumor infiltration (stage pT3NoMo) tumor progression occurred. These data demonstrate that radical prostatectomy offers an excellent survival rate for patients with localized prostatic cancer and that this rate is identical to the expected survival rate for males in this age group.
