Age-related diseases constitute an ever increasing problem in an ageing population. The objectives of future medical research in this field should not only seek to increase longevity, but also to improve the quality of life of the elderly and to enable them to live independently for a longer period of time. Osteoporosis is a prime example of such a disease, because we have the tool to prevent it, i.e. oestrogen and calcitonin, and because in all probability it will some day be curable.
