[Fluorosis following the long-term treatment of osteoporosis with sodium fluoride]. 1986

S Meseg, and H Matzkowski, and V Hasert

The fluorosis in fluor-exposed workers has been known already since nearly 50 years. It is characterized by a massive regeneration of bones. The fluorosis is only rarely observed as a sequel of the sodium fluoride therapy of osteoporosis. Out of the number of our own patients a medicamentously induced fluorosis after a 12-year sodium fluoride therapy of a steroid osteoporosis is described. The pathological value of this iatrogenic fluorosis is relatively insignificant. Nevertheless, due to the picture of complaints resulting from this a sodium fluoride therapy should be controlled. In this case the lateral X-ray picture of the lumbar vertebral column serves as most important control parameters.

D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010024 Osteoporosis Reduction of bone mass without alteration in the composition of bone, leading to fractures. Primary osteoporosis can be of two major types: postmenopausal osteoporosis (OSTEOPOROSIS, POSTMENOPAUSAL) and age-related or senile osteoporosis. D010026 Osteosclerosis An abnormal hardening or increased density of bone tissue. Osteoscleroses
D001842 Bone and Bones A specialized CONNECTIVE TISSUE that is the main constituent of the SKELETON. The principal cellular component of bone is comprised of OSTEOBLASTS; OSTEOCYTES; and OSTEOCLASTS, while FIBRILLAR COLLAGENS and hydroxyapatite crystals form the BONE MATRIX. D005938 Glucocorticoids A group of CORTICOSTEROIDS that affect carbohydrate metabolism (GLUCONEOGENESIS, liver glycogen deposition, elevation of BLOOD SUGAR), inhibit ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE secretion, and possess pronounced anti-inflammatory activity. They also play a role in fat and protein metabolism, maintenance of arterial blood pressure, alteration of the connective tissue response to injury, reduction in the number of circulating lymphocytes, and functioning of the central nervous system. D013167 Spondylitis, Ankylosing A chronic inflammatory condition affecting the axial joints, such as the SACROILIAC JOINT and other intervertebral or costovertebral joints. It occurs predominantly in young males and is characterized by pain and stiffness of joints (ANKYLOSIS) with inflammation at tendon insertions.
