Effect of induced hypercalcemia on ultimobranchial gland of the lizard, Calotes versicolor. 1977

D M Dubewar, and S A Suryawanshi

The ultimobranchial of the lizard Calotes consists of parenchymal patches and several follicles. After induced hypercalcemia, the gland became more active suggesting the hypocalcemic secretion from the gland.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008116 Lizards Reptiles within the order Squamata that generally possess limbs, moveable EYELIDS, and EXTERNAL EAR openings, although there are some species which lack one or more of these structures. Chameleons,Geckos,Chameleon,Gecko,Lizard
D002118 Calcium A basic element found in nearly all tissues. It is a member of the alkaline earth family of metals with the atomic symbol Ca, atomic number 20, and atomic weight 40. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and combines with phosphorus to form calcium phosphate in the bones and teeth. It is essential for the normal functioning of nerves and muscles and plays a role in blood coagulation (as factor IV) and in many enzymatic processes. D002122 Calcium Chloride A salt used to replenish calcium levels, as an acid-producing diuretic, and as an antidote for magnesium poisoning. Calcium Chloride Dihydrate,Calcium Chloride, Anhydrous
D004872 Ergocalciferols Derivatives of ERGOSTEROL formed by ULTRAVIOLET RAYS breaking of the C9-C10 bond. They differ from CHOLECALCIFEROL in having a double bond between C22 and C23 and a methyl group at C24. Calciferols,Vitamin D 2,Ergocalciferol,Vitamin D2,D2, Vitamin
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D014460 Ultimobranchial Body A diverticulum from the fourth pharyngeal pouch of an embryo, regarded by some as a rudimentary fifth pharyngeal pouch and by others as a lateral thyroid primordium. The ultimobranchial bodies of lower vertebrates contain large amounts of calcitonin. In mammals the bodies fuse with the thyroid gland and are thought to develop into the parafollicular cells.
