[Effect of cytotoxic Hodgkin's serum on LIF activity of T- and B-lymphocytes]. 1978

T Chisesi, and M Giacobbo, and T Capnist

The cytotoxic activity of Hodgkin serum on some isolated T and B lymphocyte populations of 10 normal subjects, 10 patients with Hodgkin disease in the acute phase and 10 patients with Hodgkin disease but in clinical and biohumoral remission was studied. The effect of citotoxic serum variously affects the two different lymphocyte populations, particularly inhibiting LIF activity of T lymphocytes, while stimulating LIF activity of B lymphocytes. The possible causes of this phenomenon are set forth as well as their clinical implications.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007106 Immune Sera Serum that contains antibodies. It is obtained from an animal that has been immunized either by ANTIGEN injection or infection with microorganisms containing the antigen. Antisera,Immune Serums,Sera, Immune,Serums, Immune
D008222 Lymphokines Soluble protein factors generated by activated lymphocytes that affect other cells, primarily those involved in cellular immunity. Lymphocyte Mediators,Mediators, Lymphocyte
D012075 Remission, Spontaneous A spontaneous diminution or abatement of a disease over time, without formal treatment. Spontaneous Healing,Spontaneous Regression,Spontaneous Remission,Healing, Spontaneous,Regression, Spontaneous,Spontaneous Healings,Spontaneous Regressions
D003602 Cytotoxicity, Immunologic The phenomenon of target cell destruction by immunologically active effector cells. It may be brought about directly by sensitized T-lymphocytes or by lymphoid or myeloid "killer" cells, or it may be mediated by cytotoxic antibody, cytotoxic factor released by lymphoid cells, or complement. D006689 Hodgkin Disease A malignant disease characterized by progressive enlargement of the lymph nodes, spleen, and general lymphoid tissue. In the classical variant, giant usually multinucleate Hodgkin's and REED-STERNBERG CELLS are present; in the nodular lymphocyte predominant variant, lymphocytic and histiocytic cells are seen. D001402 B-Lymphocytes Lymphoid cells concerned with humoral immunity. They are short-lived cells resembling bursa-derived lymphocytes of birds in their production of immunoglobulin upon appropriate stimulation. D013601 T-Lymphocytes Lymphocytes responsible for cell-mediated immunity. Two types have been identified - cytotoxic (T-LYMPHOCYTES, CYTOTOXIC) and helper T-lymphocytes (T-LYMPHOCYTES, HELPER-INDUCER). They are formed when lymphocytes circulate through the THYMUS GLAND and differentiate to thymocytes. When exposed to an antigen, they divide rapidly and produce large numbers of new T cells sensitized to that antigen.
