Department of Paediatrics, St Joseph Hospital, Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

In 1279 very premature or very low birthweight infants the use and duration of treatment with total parenteral nutrition were associated with short gestational age and low birth weight. Infants treated with total parenteral nutrition had a higher risk of sepsis usually caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis or Staphylococcus aureus.

D010289 Parenteral Nutrition, Total The delivery of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient whose sole source of nutrients is via solutions administered intravenously, subcutaneously, or by some other non-alimentary route. The basic components of TPN solutions are protein hydrolysates or free amino acid mixtures, monosaccharides, and electrolytes. Components are selected for their ability to reverse catabolism, promote anabolism, and build structural proteins. D012044 Regression Analysis Procedures for finding the mathematical function which best describes the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In linear regression (see LINEAR MODELS) the relationship is constrained to be a straight line and LEAST-SQUARES ANALYSIS is used to determine the best fit. In logistic regression (see LOGISTIC MODELS) the dependent variable is qualitative rather than continuously variable and LIKELIHOOD FUNCTIONS are used to find the best relationship. In multiple regression, the dependent variable is considered to depend on more than a single independent variable.
