[The effect of the spleen on tumor growth in mouse lines with various spleen sizes]. 1979

H von Wallenberg, and P Mainusch, and J Meyer, and C Hammer

Selectively raised laboratory mice differ according to spleen size in their immunologic behavior against various tumors. A small spleen and splenectomy reduce tumor growth, whereas a large spleen or additional transfer of tumor antigen-specific spleen cells ("suppressor cells") stimulate tumor incidence.

D008297 Male Males
D008815 Mice, Inbred Strains Genetically identical individuals developed from brother and sister matings which have been carried out for twenty or more generations, or by parent x offspring matings carried out with certain restrictions. All animals within an inbred strain trace back to a common ancestor in the twentieth generation. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013154 Spleen An encapsulated lymphatic organ through which venous blood filters.
D013156 Splenectomy Surgical procedure involving either partial or entire removal of the spleen. Splenectomies
D013601 T-Lymphocytes Lymphocytes responsible for cell-mediated immunity. Two types have been identified - cytotoxic (T-LYMPHOCYTES, CYTOTOXIC) and helper T-lymphocytes (T-LYMPHOCYTES, HELPER-INDUCER). They are formed when lymphocytes circulate through the THYMUS GLAND and differentiate to thymocytes. When exposed to an antigen, they divide rapidly and produce large numbers of new T cells sensitized to that antigen.
