This study shows the antibacterial effect of amniotic fluid collected on 10 women from 32 to 38 weeks. Two techniques were used. The first is a quantitative analysis of a bacterial culture with amniotic fluid as compared to controls, with inhibition by the amniotic fluid demonstrated. The second is a morphologic analysis of gonorrheal cultures by electron microscopy, showing alteration of the bacteria when amniotic fluid is present. These facts are of interest when one tries to understand the discrepancy between high rates of discovery of bacteria during pregnancy and low rates of intra-amniotic infection by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008854 Microscopy, Electron Microscopy using an electron beam, instead of light, to visualize the sample, thereby allowing much greater magnification. The interactions of ELECTRONS with specimens are used to provide information about the fine structure of that specimen. In TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY the reactions of the electrons that are transmitted through the specimen are imaged. In SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY an electron beam falls at a non-normal angle on the specimen and the image is derived from the reactions occurring above the plane of the specimen. Electron Microscopy
D009344 Neisseria gonorrhoeae A species of gram-negative, aerobic bacteria primarily found in purulent venereal discharges. It is the causative agent of GONORRHEA. D000653 Amniotic Fluid A clear, yellowish liquid that envelopes the FETUS inside the sac of AMNION. In the first trimester, it is likely a transudate of maternal or fetal plasma. In the second trimester, amniotic fluid derives primarily from fetal lung and kidney. Cells or substances in this fluid can be removed for prenatal diagnostic tests (AMNIOCENTESIS).
