In the short bowel syndrome, enteral nutrition makes it possible to ensure adequate caloric intake, increases absorption, and facilitates intestinal adaptation. In a series of 98 patients with short bowel syndrome, enteral nutrition proved to be well tolerated, effective from a nutritional standpoint and made it possible to maintain digestive feeding alone in 88 cases. The quality of the result is determined by strictly observing the practical applications of this method (slow continuous flow rate, a cautious increase, and administration of electrolyte and mineral supplements).
