Differential diagnosis between normal pressure hydrocephalus and cerebral atrophy on computed tomography. 1979

J M Leborgne, and J J Sheldon, and M S Goldstein, and W M Smoak, and A N Serafini

A brain computed tomography--cisternographic correlation of 48 cases suspected of having normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) was undertaken, observing that the enlargement of temporal horns correlates with abnormal cisternograms compatible with NPH, and appears to be a reliable differential feature from cases of cerebral atrophy with "ex-vacuo hydrocephalus". The results of this correlation and typical images are presented.

D008297 Male Males
D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon

D006849 Hydrocephalus Excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranium which may be associated with dilation of cerebral ventricles, INTRACRANIAL HYPERTENSION; HEADACHE; lethargy; URINARY INCONTINENCE; and ATAXIA. D006850 Hydrocephalus, Normal Pressure A form of compensated hydrocephalus characterized clinically by a slowly progressive gait disorder (see GAIT DISORDERS, NEUROLOGIC), progressive intellectual decline, and URINARY INCONTINENCE. Spinal fluid pressure tends to be in the high normal range. This condition may result from processes which interfere with the absorption of CSF including SUBARACHNOID HEMORRHAGE, chronic MENINGITIS, and other conditions. D014695 Cerebral Ventriculography Radiography of the ventricular system of the brain after injection of air or other contrast medium directly into the cerebral ventricles. It is used also for x-ray computed tomography of the cerebral ventricles. Ventriculography, Cerebral,Cerebral Ventriculographies,Ventriculographies, Cerebral
