[Comparative studies on Trichomonas vaginalis in the scanning electron microscope]. 1979

W Kazanowska, and K J Jodczyk, and K Kuczyńska, and M J Karpowicz

Different strains of Trichomonas vaginalis isolated from the vagina of women with trichomoniasis were used in these investigations. The cultures were carried out on modified CPLM and Roiron media. Individuals at the highest phase of logarithmic growth underwent the observation. Preparations to be evaluated in scanning electron microscope ( JEOL - JSM -S1) were made from a condensed culture containing 500,000 individuals per ml. Each time, microscopic pictures obtained after washing, demucination and various fixation procedures and after lyophylisation were compared to each other. The pictures obtained from smears taken from the vagina of women with trichomoniasis were compared, too. Special attention was paid to the behaviour of the surface and motion organelles of the parasite.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008855 Microscopy, Electron, Scanning Microscopy in which the object is examined directly by an electron beam scanning the specimen point-by-point. The image is constructed by detecting the products of specimen interactions that are projected above the plane of the sample, such as backscattered electrons. Although SCANNING TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY also scans the specimen point by point with the electron beam, the image is constructed by detecting the electrons, or their interaction products that are transmitted through the sample plane, so that is a form of TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. D003470 Culture Media Any liquid or solid preparation made specifically for the growth, storage, or transport of microorganisms or other types of cells. The variety of media that exist allow for the culturing of specific microorganisms and cell types, such as differential media, selective media, test media, and defined media. Solid media consist of liquid media that have been solidified with an agent such as AGAR or GELATIN. Media, Culture

D046508 Culture Techniques Methods of maintaining or growing biological materials in controlled laboratory conditions. These include the cultures of CELLS; TISSUES; organs; or embryo in vitro. Both animal and plant tissues may be cultured by a variety of methods. Cultures may derive from normal or abnormal tissues, and consist of a single cell type or mixed cell types.
