The expression 'profound hearing loss' used in the diagnostic criteria for sudden deafness should be changed to 'moderate to profound hearing loss'. In clinical diagnosis, a 30-dB hearing loss at 1 kHz can be used as a tentative criterion for sudden deafness.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010897 Pitch Discrimination The ability to differentiate sound frequency or pitch. Discrimination, Pitch,Pitch Discriminations
D011379 Prognosis A prediction of the probable outcome of a disease based on a individual's condition and the usual course of the disease as seen in similar situations. Prognostic Factor,Prognostic Factors,Factor, Prognostic,Factors, Prognostic,Prognoses
D003639 Hearing Loss, Sudden Sensorineural hearing loss which develops suddenly over a period of hours or a few days. It varies in severity from mild to total deafness. Sudden deafness can be due to head trauma, vascular diseases, infections, or can appear without obvious cause or warning. Deafness, Sudden,Sudden Deafness,Sudden Hearing Loss

D001299 Audiometry The testing of the acuity of the sense of hearing to determine the thresholds of the lowest intensity levels at which an individual can hear a set of tones. The frequencies between 125 and 8000 Hz are used to test air conduction thresholds and the frequencies between 250 and 4000 Hz are used to test bone conduction thresholds. Audiometries
D001301 Audiometry, Pure-Tone Measurement of hearing based on the use of pure tones of various frequencies and intensities as auditory stimuli. Audiometry, Bekesy,Audiometry, Pure Tone,Bekesy Audiometry,Pure-Tone Audiometry
