Gastric emptying of isotope labelled solid meal was studied in 17 patients after resection of esophageal carcinoma and 7 normal subjects. The radioisotope method provides a quantitative and noninvasive technique for measuring gastric emptying. This study indicated that gastric emptying of patients who had tumor resected recently (with an average of 24 days) was delayed obviously as compared with that of normal subjects (P less than 0.01). Slow gastric emptying is mainly due to truncal vagotomy during cancer resection. More than 8 months after the operation, emptying returned to normal and there was no difference between the postoperative and control groups (P greater than 0.05). An explanation for the mechanisms was given in this paper.
