Effects of design on stress distribution of intracoronal gold restorations. 1977

J W Farah, and J B Dennison, and J M Powers

Eight intracoronal and extracoronal designs for gold restorations with different tapers to the lateral walls were investigated to determine the most efficient design in distributing occlusal stresses. It was found that the occulusal wall of an inlay cavity with a 7 degree taper and no bevel resulted in a better stress distribution than a cavity preparation with a greater taper or a long bevel. It was shown further that a wide inlay preparation resulted in less stress if the cusps were protected by gold.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007284 Inlays Restorations of metal, porcelain, or plastic made to fit a cavity preparation, then cemented into the tooth. Onlays are restorations which fit into cavity preparations and overlay the occlusal surface of a tooth or teeth. Onlays are retained by frictional or mechanical factors. D003442 Crowns A prosthetic restoration that reproduces the entire surface anatomy of the visible natural crown of a tooth. It may be partial (covering three or more surfaces of a tooth) or complete (covering all surfaces). It is made of gold or other metal, porcelain, or resin. D003737 Dental Cavity Preparation An operation in which carious material is removed from teeth and biomechanically correct forms are established in the teeth to receive and retain restorations. A constant requirement is provision for prevention of failure of the restoration through recurrence of decay or inadequate resistance to applied stresses. D003779 Denture Design The plan, delineation, and location of actual structural elements of dentures. The design can relate to retainers, stress-breakers, occlusal rests, flanges, framework, lingual or palatal bars, reciprocal arms, etc. Denture Designs,Design, Denture,Designs, Denture
D003799 Dental Stress Analysis The description and measurement of the various factors that produce physical stress upon dental restorations, prostheses, or appliances, materials associated with them, or the natural oral structures.
