Department of Ophthalmology, Shimane Medical University, Izumo, Japan.

We examined a 52-year-old man with bilateral symmetric lesions of the cornea and fundus. The corneal lesions were compatible with granular dystrophy, and the fundus lesions were consistent with cone dystrophy. The simultaneous occurrence of these dystrophies may be uncommon.

D010786 Photoreceptor Cells Specialized cells that detect and transduce light. They are classified into two types based on their light reception structure, the ciliary photoreceptors and the rhabdomeric photoreceptors with MICROVILLI. Ciliary photoreceptor cells use OPSINS that activate a PHOSPHODIESTERASE phosphodiesterase cascade. Rhabdomeric photoreceptor cells use opsins that activate a PHOSPHOLIPASE C cascade. D012162 Retinal Degeneration A retrogressive pathological change in the retina, focal or generalized, caused by genetic defects, inflammation, trauma, vascular disease, or aging. Degeneration affecting predominantly the macula lutea of the retina is MACULAR DEGENERATION. D003317 Corneal Dystrophies, Hereditary Bilateral hereditary disorders of the cornea, usually autosomal dominant, which may be present at birth but more frequently develop during adolescence and progress slowly throughout life. Central macular dystrophy is transmitted as an autosomal recessive defect.
