Isolation of poly-alpha-L-guluronate lyase from Klebsiella aerogenes. 1977

J Boyd, and J R Turvey

The bacterium Klebsiella aerogenes type 25 produces an extracellular alginolyase which has been partly purified. The enzyme is specific for the alpha-L-guluronosyl linkages in whole alginate and fractions therefrom. The end products of its action on polyguluronic acid blocks are mainly the unsaturated di- and tri-saccharides, with a smaller proportion of the homologous tetrasaccharide. Some general properties of the enzyme are reported.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007711 Klebsiella pneumoniae Gram-negative, non-motile, capsulated, gas-producing rods found widely in nature and associated with urinary and respiratory infections in humans. Bacillus pneumoniae,Bacterium pneumoniae crouposae,Hyalococcus pneumoniae,Klebsiella pneumoniae aerogenes,Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis
D011133 Polysaccharide-Lyases A group of carbon-oxygen lyases. These enzymes catalyze the breakage of a carbon-oxygen bond in polysaccharides leading to an unsaturated product and the elimination of an alcohol. EC 4.2.2. Polysaccharide Lyase,Polysaccharide-Lyase,Lyase, Polysaccharide,Polysaccharide Lyases
D002412 Cations Positively charged atoms, radicals or groups of atoms which travel to the cathode or negative pole during electrolysis. Cation
D006603 Hexuronic Acids Term used to designate tetrahydroxy aldehydic acids obtained by oxidation of hexose sugars, i.e. glucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, etc. Historically, the name hexuronic acid was originally given to ascorbic acid. Hexouronic Acids,Acids, Hexouronic,Acids, Hexuronic
D000464 Alginates Salts and esters of ALGINIC ACID that are used as HYDROGELS; DENTAL IMPRESSION MATERIALS, and as absorbent materials for surgical dressings (BANDAGES, HYDROCOLLOID). They are also used to manufacture MICROSPHERES and NANOPARTICLES for DIAGNOSTIC REAGENT KITS and DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS.
