The article elucidates the development of soviet traumatology and orthopedy. There appeared institutes, chairs at medical institutes and institutes for advanced postgraduate training. A network of ambulatory medical institutions and hospitals has been created in rural regions and towns. Scientific societies and Journal "Orthopedy, Traumatology and Prostheses" have made great contribution in the development of traumatology and orthopedy.
