The interaction of platelets with natural and artificial surfaces is briefly reviewed, emphasizing the role of the platelet glycoprotein Ib and IIb/IIIa receptors. Studies utilizing monoclonal antibodies to these receptors for the diagnosis and therapy of hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders are described, indicating the potential of such agents as platelet inhibitors.
