[Late results of treating congenital hypothyroidism]. 1977

M V Zhurova, and L N Tereshchenko

The authors present remote results of treatment of 23 patients with congenital hypothyroidism in whom the disease manifested itself in childhood; these patients reached the age of 20-30 years by the end of their examination. The efficacy of replacement hormonal therapy was connected not only with the early diagnosis of the disease, and timely treatment, but also with regularity of its institution at later years. Stable hypothyroidish compensation at the early stages of child development led to a proper physical, mental and sexual development of the patients, and promoted normalization of the metabolic processes and functional activity of the internal organs, preventing the patients' invalidization.

In its most severe form, there is accumulation of MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES in the SKIN and EDEMA, known as MYXEDEMA. It may be primary or secondary due to other pituitary disease, or hypothalamic dysfunction.
