One of the most rapid actions of prolactin in mouse mammary gland explants is the stimulation of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity. Several protein kinase C activators including mezerein, dicaprin, diolein, and 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-rac-glycerol were found to stimulate ODC activity as does prolactin. Both mezerein and the diglycerides produced nonadditive responses when tested with maximum stimulatory concentrations of prolactin. The results of these studies therefore provide further evidence that the prolactin stimulation of ODC activation in the mammary gland may involve an activation of protein kinase C.

D009955 Ornithine Decarboxylase A pyridoxal-phosphate protein, believed to be the rate-limiting compound in the biosynthesis of polyamines. It catalyzes the decarboxylation of ornithine to form putrescine, which is then linked to a propylamine moiety of decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionine to form spermidine. Ornithine Carboxy-lyase,Carboxy-lyase, Ornithine,Decarboxylase, Ornithine,Ornithine Carboxy lyase
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011388 Prolactin A lactogenic hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). It is a polypeptide of approximately 23 kD. Besides its major action on lactation, in some species prolactin exerts effects on reproduction, maternal behavior, fat metabolism, immunomodulation and osmoregulation. Prolactin receptors are present in the mammary gland, hypothalamus, liver, ovary, testis, and prostate. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
