The sequence of the 18 S rRNA of Tenebrio molitor is reported. A detailed secondary structure model for eukaryotic small subunit rRNAs is proposed. The model comprises 48 universal helices that eukaryotic and prokaryotic small subunit rRNAs have in common, plus a number of helices in areas of variable secondary structure. For the central area of the model, an alternative structure is possible, applicable only to eukaryotic small subunit rRNAs. Possibly, small subunit rRNA switched to this alternative conformation after the eukaryotic branch had been established in evolution. Another possibility is that the two conformers represent a dynamic structural switch functioning during the translational activity of the eukaryotic ribosome.

D008969 Molecular Sequence Data Descriptions of specific amino acid, carbohydrate, or nucleotide sequences which have appeared in the published literature and/or are deposited in and maintained by databanks such as GENBANK, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), National Biomedical Research Foundation (NBRF), or other sequence repositories. D009690 Nucleic Acid Conformation The spatial arrangement of the atoms of a nucleic acid or polynucleotide that results in its characteristic 3-dimensional shape. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D001483 Base Sequence The sequence of PURINES and PYRIMIDINES in nucleic acids and polynucleotides. It is also called nucleotide sequence. D012335 RNA, Ribosomal The most abundant form of RNA. Together with proteins, it forms the ribosomes, playing a structural role and also a role in ribosomal binding of mRNA and tRNAs. Individual chains are conventionally designated by their sedimentation coefficients. In eukaryotes, four large chains exist, synthesized in the nucleolus and constituting about 50% of the ribosome. D012337 RNA, Ribosomal, 18S Constituent of the 40S subunit of eukaryotic ribosomes. 18S rRNA is involved in the initiation of polypeptide synthesis in eukaryotes. 18S Ribosomal RNA,18S RRNA,RNA, 18S Ribosomal,Ribosomal RNA, 18S
D013712 Tenebrio A genus of beetles which infests grain products. Its larva is called mealworm. Mealworm,Mealworms,Tenebrios
