[Biochemical and radioimmunological research on cannibalism in pigs raised under commercial conditions]. 1987

P I Petkov, and P Georgiev, and V Delistamatis

Studied were 66 hybrid Camborough pigs aged 2 months and equated in terms of live weight. Fourteen of them were defined as aggressors (attackers) and 12--as victims that were bit to a varying extent on the body. Another group of 40 pigs were kept as controls. Studied were the clinical symptoms manifested by both the pigs exhibiting cannibalism and by those that suffered, following up a number of biochemical indices. The quantitative fluctuations with the amounts of Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, Fe, Zn, and Cu were also followed up in all groups of animals. Differences were established between the levels of the various macro- and microelements. Ascertained was the part played by the thyroid, employing radioimmunologic methods with its hormones in the etiopathogenesis of cannibalism.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011863 Radioimmunoassay Classic quantitative assay for detection of antigen-antibody reactions using a radioactively labeled substance (radioligand) either directly or indirectly to measure the binding of the unlabeled substance to a specific antibody or other receptor system. Non-immunogenic substances (e.g., haptens) can be measured if coupled to larger carrier proteins (e.g., bovine gamma-globulin or human serum albumin) capable of inducing antibody formation. Radioimmunoassays
D002031 Bulgaria A country in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Romania and Turkey. The capital is Sofia.
D002190 Cannibalism Eating other individuals of one's own species. Cannibalisms
D000374 Aggression Behavior which may be manifested by destructive and attacking action which is verbal or physical, by covert attitudes of hostility or by obstructionism. Aggressions
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D000822 Animal Husbandry The science of breeding, feeding and care of domestic animals; includes housing and nutrition. Animal Husbandries,Husbandries, Animal,Husbandry, Animal
D013552 Swine Any of various animals that constitute the family Suidae and comprise stout-bodied, short-legged omnivorous mammals with thick skin, usually covered with coarse bristles, a rather long mobile snout, and small tail. Included are the genera Babyrousa, Phacochoerus (wart hogs), and Sus, the latter containing the domestic pig (see SUS SCROFA). D013961 Thyroid Gland A highly vascularized endocrine gland consisting of two lobes joined by a thin band of tissue with one lobe on each side of the TRACHEA. It secretes THYROID HORMONES from the follicular cells and CALCITONIN from the parafollicular cells thereby regulating METABOLISM and CALCIUM level in blood, respectively.
