Ectopic pregnancy and a sensitive test for urinary human chorionic gonadotropin. 1987

A commercially highly sensitive test for human chorionic gonadotropin was used in daily routine to screen for ectopic pregnancy (detection threshold 75 mlU/ml). The test, when used in 120 patients with ectopic pregnancy, had a diagnostic specificity of 100%, sensitivity 96.7%, the predictive value of a positive test was 100%, and of a negative test 90%.

Similar to the pituitary LUTEINIZING HORMONE in structure and function, chorionic gonadotropin is involved in maintaining the CORPUS LUTEUM during pregnancy. CG consists of two noncovalently linked subunits, alpha and beta.
