Can dopamine beta-hydroxylase levels predict adverse reactions to disulfiram? 1978

J A Ewing, and B A Rouse, and R A Mueller, and D Silver

Disulfiram had more pronounced sedative effects on healthy normal subjects with low levels of plasma dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) than it did on subjects with higher levels. It is suggested that DBH levels might provide a means of predicting increased susceptibility to disulfiram side effects.

D004221 Disulfiram A carbamate derivative used as an alcohol deterrent. It is a relatively nontoxic substance when administered alone, but markedly alters the intermediary metabolism of alcohol. When alcohol is ingested after administration of disulfiram, blood acetaldehyde concentrations are increased, followed by flushing, systemic vasodilation, respiratory difficulties, nausea, hypotension, and other symptoms (acetaldehyde syndrome). It acts by inhibiting aldehyde dehydrogenase. D000437 Alcoholism A primary, chronic disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. The disease is often progressive and fatal. It is characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking, most notably denial. Each of these symptoms may be continuous or periodic.
