OBJECTIVE Chlamydia psittaci (Cps) feeds on gram-negative aerobic cells. Respiratory inhalation of Cps or close contact with infected animals can cause psittacosis in humans. Given its challengeable early diagnosis and rapid progression, misdiagnosis or improper antibacterial drugs may lead to multi-organ dysfunction with a high mortality. METHODS A pregnant woman at 29+1 weeks of gestational age had a fever. CT images of the chest showed lamellar consolidations in the inferior lobe of the right lung, light inflammation in the middle lobe of the right lung. Negative results were obtained from multiple times of blood and sputum culture. Next generation sequencing (NGS) results identified that Cps caused severe pneumonia, which was alleviated by specific antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSIONS Cps can cause severe pneumonia in the pregnant woman and be cured through precise antibiotic treatment. NGS is efficient in the rapid identification of pathogens and accurate diagnosis when bacteriological culture fails.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007249 Inflammation A pathological process characterized by injury or destruction of tissues caused by a variety of cytologic and chemical reactions. It is usually manifested by typical signs of pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Innate Inflammatory Response,Inflammations,Inflammatory Response, Innate,Innate Inflammatory Responses
D009956 Psittacosis Infection with CHLAMYDOPHILA PSITTACI (formerly Chlamydia psittaci), transmitted to humans by inhalation of dust-borne contaminated nasal secretions or excreta of infected BIRDS. This infection results in a febrile illness characterized by PNEUMONITIS and systemic manifestations. Ornithosis,Ornithoses,Psittacoses

D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D002691 Chlamydophila psittaci A genus of CHLAMYDOPHILA infecting primarily birds. It contains eight known serovars, some of which infect more than one type of host, including humans. Chlamydia psittaci

D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
