[Cryopreservation of parathyroid tissue: evaluation of a simplified method]. 1986

C Duff, and F Largiadèr

A simplified, less expensive cryopreservation technique for parathyroid tissue was examined in animal study and on human tissue in vitro. More than 3/4 of all replantations in the rat were successful after cryopreservation. After replantation of one single gland only 1/3 of all animals attained normal parathyroid function. This fact shows the importance of the quantity of transplanted viable tissue. Viability of human parathyroid tissue after cryopreservation was 80-90%. The PTH-production of human parathyroid tissue in vitro after cryopreservation and the suppressibility in different calcium concentrations were similar to normal fresh tissue. All our results prove a good functioning of this simplified cryopreservation method.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006961 Hyperparathyroidism A condition of abnormally elevated output of PARATHYROID HORMONE (or PTH) triggering responses that increase blood CALCIUM. It is characterized by HYPERCALCEMIA and BONE RESORPTION, eventually leading to bone diseases. PRIMARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM is caused by parathyroid HYPERPLASIA or PARATHYROID NEOPLASMS. SECONDARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM is increased PTH secretion in response to HYPOCALCEMIA, usually caused by chronic KIDNEY DISEASES.
D007011 Hypoparathyroidism A condition caused by a deficiency of PARATHYROID HORMONE (or PTH). It is characterized by HYPOCALCEMIA and hyperphosphatemia. Hypocalcemia leads to TETANY. The acquired form is due to removal or injuries to the PARATHYROID GLANDS. The congenital form is due to mutations of genes, such as TBX1; (see DIGEORGE SYNDROME); CASR encoding CALCIUM-SENSING RECEPTOR; or PTH encoding parathyroid hormone. D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009926 Organ Preservation The process by which organs are kept viable outside of the organism from which they were removed (i.e., kept from decay by means of a chemical agent, cooling, or a fluid substitute that mimics the natural state within the organism). Organ Preservations,Preservation, Organ,Preservations, Organ
D010280 Parathyroid Glands Two pairs of small oval-shaped glands located in the front and the base of the NECK and adjacent to the two lobes of THYROID GLAND. They secrete PARATHYROID HORMONE that regulates the balance of CALCIUM; PHOSPHORUS; and MAGNESIUM in the body. Gland, Parathyroid,Glands, Parathyroid,Parathyroid Gland
D010281 Parathyroid Hormone A polypeptide hormone (84 amino acid residues) secreted by the PARATHYROID GLANDS which performs the essential role of maintaining intracellular CALCIUM levels in the body. Parathyroid hormone increases intracellular calcium by promoting the release of CALCIUM from BONE, increases the intestinal absorption of calcium, increases the renal tubular reabsorption of calcium, and increases the renal excretion of phosphates. D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery.
