[Vitamin E in pediatrics (author's transl)]. 1978

H Böhles

The biochemical mechanism of vitamin E cannot be explained up to the moment. Empirically, there are several possibilities for the clinical use of vitamin E, especially in pediatrics. This review is focusing on the hemolytic anemia of the preterm infant, hereditary bullous epidermolysis, retrolental fibroplasia and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Excess vitamin E must be considered as potentially toxic.

D012178 Retinopathy of Prematurity A bilateral retinopathy occurring in premature infants treated with excessively high concentrations of oxygen, characterized by vascular dilatation, proliferation, and tortuosity, edema, and retinal detachment, with ultimate conversion of the retina into a fibrous mass that can be seen as a dense retrolental membrane. Usually growth of the eye is arrested and may result in microophthalmia, and blindness may occur.
